Tuna Salad Sandwich

This is one of my go-to sandwiches. Its extra special being made from my homemade bread recipe. I hope you enjoy it too.

I’m on a not so secret mission to show people that they can eat mostly organic without breaking the bank. Let me know if you like this one in the comments and what you think of the cost per portion.

Key Facts:

  • Time: 5 minutes assuming you have already made the bread (I store mine in the freezer) and have the other ingredients at home
  • Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

  • 2 Slices of Homemade Bread – 18p (try my delicious 70/30 white/spelt wholemeal recipe, each loaf makes about 12 medium average size slices at 9p each, but the cost will vary if your slice size varies). Tip: Try to get into the practice of making your own bread, as shopbought bread comes with a lot of nasty ingredients (check for yourself with the Free Yuka app with their Barcode scanner for the ingredients).
  • 10g Organic Naturli Spreadable Vegetable Oil Butter – 9p (£3.90 for 450g from Sainsburys). Tip: For this recipe I used this vegetable butter as it works very well, on top of being rated highly on Yuka (product toxicity checker app).
  • Organic Salad Mix – 19p (£1.50 for 60g – approx 8 portions of SO Organic 60g Babyleaf & Rocket Salad from Sainsburys)
  • *(Optional) Onion slices, Cucumber slices and Tomato Slices (I like Sainsburys Organic versions).
  • 3 Heaped Tablespoons (77g) Tuna & Sweetcorn Sandwich Mix – 51p (£2.54 for 385g, about 5 portions – Tuna & Sweetcorn Deli Filler 385g from Sainsburys, which is a great time saver and no additives)
  • *(Optional) Any additional seasoning you may like to add, such as sea salt and pepper.

*Not included in the per person or per serving cost calculation. This is as the cost is very low (pennies) or negligible. Also most people will already have these ingredients readily available in their kitchens.

Method:

  1. Spread a thin layer of Butter onto both sides of the Bread.
  2. Add the salad leaves to one side of the bread. (Optional) Add onion, cucumber and tomato slices.
  3. Add the tuna & sweetcorn sandwich filler onto the salad leaves.
  4. Add the non tuna slice to the tuna slice to create your sandwich. Press slightly together to ‘glue’ it together.
  5. Enjoy 🙂

Prices correct at the time of publication.

If you liked this sandwich, you may also like my beef salad sandwich recipe at £2.04 a portion.

Life is good when you have a good sandwich.
